I read the whole thing on my Kindle. I have been playing ukulele for several years now, so that might color my impressions.Mr Andreas has a website on which he posts ukulele tips and lessons. This book is apparently a compilation of pages from that website, reformatted into book form. In this book he repeatedly refers to his website and tells the reader to go to his website and open a page and view the YouTube lesson there. That's frustrating. It's a book. Books don't work like that. This book is not well organized. It seems that Mr Andreas had an idea, rambled on about it until he got tired of it; then had another idea and went on about that for a while; again and again. I don't see much thought behind the book's organization. There doesn't seem to be much effort at being sequential nor complete. He seems to think that he just has to throw a bunch of stuff out there, and he's done. Throw in the words "sage" and "mastery", and you have a product. The word Mastery (in the title) implies to me that someone has an overall understanding or comprehension of a topic, and not just a bunch of isolated tricks. I didn't find any big ideas in here. Just an unorganized collection of pieces. So I don't understand how this book will help me become a master. On the other hand, I haven't yet found any really great ukulele teaching books. I've bought quite a few, and every once in a while I find something in one that helps me take a step forward. I'm still looking for a book that will help me learn both how to play and how to understand, to the degree that I can learn how to move myself forward. That would be mastery.
The book covers information ranging from basic to intermediate/advanced theory. However, the 'basic' matter has not been simplified enough whereas it appears to be attempting to simplify the 'intermediate/advanced' information. Moreover, all the material, regardless of basic or intermediate/advanced, seems to be rather sketchy and hastily treated. The title, viz. 'ukelele mastery simplified, how anyone can become a ninja,' and similar advertising are rather misleading. If you are new to the ukelele, or music as such, and serious about wanting to start playing, this is not the book for you. There is plenty of other free stuff on the net that'll give you a better intro and get you going, say, 'Ukelele for Dummies' by Alistair Wood, Madeline L Pots' video lessons and a whole lot of dedicated websites. It may be kept in mind that many who play instruments proficiently, including some who have acquired fame, do not know music theory and cannot 'read/write' music. Mr Andreas gives substantial 'pep talk' in this skinny volume, but this can get annoying when it's the only thing that one is able to understand, and more so, with ridiculous ease.Nevertheless, if you have some idea of music theory and want to improve knowledge, you might gain a few basic things from this book. The author's personal history is impressive and he comes across as unassuming, and as being a good human being.I have not watched the videos, so this review is restricted to the written material alone.
I have the guitar mastery book which I love, and this one is laid out in the same manner, just applying it to the ukulele, if you are new to the uke, but a seasoned guitarist, you will get this stuff down very very quickly, and you will sound like you've been playing just as long, absolutely necessary to have both ebooks by Erich Andreas!!!
I picked up Erich Andreas's $0.99 kindle version to have something handy and available to reference while fiddling with my uke beside the campfire. What I discovered was a source of inspiration and encouragement to practice more. His principle philosophy of practice makes perfect, resembles a principle I read in another non-fictional work called "The Talent Code." Andreas reminds readers that skilled musicians become good at performing as a result of thousands of hours of practice. As a banjo player, I'm somewhat familiar with music theory as it relates to stringed instruments and their fretboards, but Andreas took some of the mystery and frustration out of understanding the subtle tricks of using barre chords. This book is also full of practical exercises that improve dexterity and accuracy. Andreas includes links to YouTube vids that enhance the principles he presents in this work. For the money, there is probably something in this short work that is sure to improve your "uke-ability".
It covers basics for the beginners. Dont expect it to make you a master. It would have been nicer if it had numbered lessons to go from beginner to expert. But the book just lays out lots of info, sometimes it shows the exercises to practice from 0 to pro right at the same page. Also shows advanced concepts all together. Sometimes feels like its a collection of info, not a book that wil guide you with a pace. For the cost i guess its not too bad. The author gives some nice encouragement too.Just not my type of book.
I don't see the point of this book. I could get everything it goes over on YouTube + a supporting video.Don't bother!!There are tons of better books out there. And multi-tons of free videos - where you learn the basics and better yet can see, watch, play along, as well as read and leave Comments that get answers .not platitudes. So avoid the ninjas - never did figure out what a big black covered NINJA has to do with a sweet sounding and peaceful Ukulele. "Aerobics for ukulele is much better for exercises, etc.
