This book is a perfect supplement for someone who can read music and has taken violin for a short time. The pieces are short and simple. Requires the ability to play in several keys. It is appropriate for someone who has finished most of Suzuki book 1.
This is an outstanding beginner book. There are probably two or three songs that are a little above beginner level but most of the pieces are easy and fun to play. Most of the music has fingerings (finger numbers above the notes) which can be helpful for the beginner as long as it's not used as a crutch. The selections are very recognizable and if you listen to very much classical music at all then you'll undoubtedly know this music (or at least recognize it when you start playing it).I do wish it was a little longer as it's very short and would have rated it higher if they could have included a few more songs. However, for the price it seems to be a fair to good value.I run through almost every song in this book once a day when I practice; it's a great warm up. I'm happy to have this as part of my music collection.
This is an easy but beautifully written book, with wonderful songs that are fun to play and make you feel like you are a violinist even though you're a beginner! GREAT book!
The sheet music lives up to its description and is very good for beginners. The pieces are relatively short and provide a good introduction to some of the classics albeit in a brief form.
These are very simple arrangements of some of the more well-known classical pieces (Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Für Elise, Hall of the Mountain King, etc). For a VERY beginning violin player, they might pose some challenge, but not for long, and that's part of their charm. They are easy to learn, and you can improvise some modifications to the arrangement if you'd like to make it more complex. They are, of course, not the whole song of anything -- just themes from the song. The reason I took off 1 star is simply because of the binding. The way this is bound, it's very difficult to get it to lay flat enough to sit on a music stand. Even with some bending and abusing of the binding, it's not easy. It might be easier in some cases to xerox a page off instead of trying to fiddle with getting the booklet to stay open.
As an adult beginner, I wanted to be able to play some songs rather than just the exercises I was working on. Based on reviews from here, this became my go to book. The arrangements are perfect for building some technique, there is some nice variety, and you'll be able to play some songs pretty quickly. The only complaint I have is that there are fingerings indicated over every note - it's not even really much of a complaint, except I've been trying to avoid crutches like that... and I believe there are some that are wrong... Slightly distracting if you are working on pure sight reading. Even that isn't enough to prevent me giving it 5 stars. If you are getting started, this is a highly recommended purchase.
I bought this as a gift for a friend's son, but looked it over carefully. The first thing I noticed was that it needs a spiral binding - the book is more like an oversized pamphlet than a book, and it doesn't lie open on a music stand or table. The second thing, which really stands out, is that the font is rather small for an oversized book. Since it's intended for beginners, I'd hope for a larger font. Just a note: these are not entire pieces of music, but themes. There are 18 pieces, and only one takes more than one page. Several are only comprised of 4 lines of notes. But they are highly recognizable, which should make them easy to learn, and they look like they'll be good warm-up practice once the player has advanced a bit. Overall, I'm satisfied with this book.
As a rank beginner (just a couple of weeks), these start out a little difficult for me, but I expect to be able to handle some of the songs, soon. My teacher started me on one and it's coming along okay, considering I'm still finding the strings and notes. There are helpful hints and cues if you're new to reading music.
