Tim Burton (USA, b. 1958) is the youngest of Hollywood's most successful directors. He has the knack of making films with a very broad appeal, taking the silliness out of the representation of children, while remaining in touch with the child within himself and his audiences. Burton emerged as a director and storyteller after working as an animator for Disney. His meeting with Johnny Depp enabled him to give physical form to the heroes of his imaginary worlds, where fear is mixed with laughter, strange is normal and those who are not normal, such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), must be preserved. After Beetlejuice (1988) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), the resolutely boyish Burton, now in his fifties, presents his version of Alice in Wonderland (2010).

Part of the 'Masters of Cinema' series, Aurelein Ferenczi's TIM BURTON is a comprehensive, nicely-illustrated primer on one of Hollywood's most imaginative directors. Whatever you think of his narrative skills, Tim Burton has fashioned a series of visually compelling films filled with off-kilter imagery and populated with fantastical creatures and sometimes grotesque yet nevertheless appealing characters.TIM BURTON, originally published in France in 2007, takes the reader on a concise but insightful, 104-page journey through Burton the man and the film-maker. Ferenczi discusses Burton's early life, the frustrating years with Disney, Burton's breakthrough VINCENT short and his big-screen successes and failures starting with PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE and ending with ALICE IN WONDERLAND.As documented by Ferenczi, Burton has had a mixed track record, hits such as BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and SLEEPY HOLLOW balanced against flops like ED WOOD, MARS ATTACKS and BIG FISH. Yet, whatever their fate at the box office, Burton's films remain amongst the most watchable - and often touching - flicks produced in the past 20 years.Along with charting Burton's development as a director, Ferenczi touches upon the creative people such as Vincent Price, Johnny Depp and Danny Elfman who have helped Burton bring to life the visions in his head. The book includes a chronology, filmography and bibliography but no index. While Ferenczi's book is neither exhaustive nor definitive, it is an enjoyable, informative and well-illustrated introduction to Burton's career. Film buffs will enjoy this 2011 release from Cahiers du Cinema Sarl. Recommended.
