This book is excellent-and actually, I am quite charmed and encouraged by the date stamps in each page where a previous violinist has gone through before me-50 years earlier! I think it's cool. I will be keeping this book. It is really useful not just for improving doublestops, but to improve hand position. You can't make decent double stops with a sloppy hand position. As if that weren't enough, it's easy enough yet challenging enough to keep you interested and to gradually improve your sight reading. A triple deal.Thanks. Loooooove it. :) This is a GREAT book fellow violinists. Add this one to your collection.
I have looked at Melodious Double Stops by Trott. That book appears to be more about playing pieces or etudes using double stops than about teaching you how to develop or play double stops. This book by Whistler seems to be more of a "method" type book, which is what I was looking for. I also have the position studies books by Whistler and love them.
I have been looking for help with playing double stops and this book is the perfect thing! It starts you out with easy to play samples and works up to more difficult double stops taking away some of the frustration.
This is a great book to start learning double stops. It takes thru simpler excercies then gradually increases the difficulty. I did not have enough formal training in my youth and now find myself learning many things I missed. I highly recommend this book to any adults violinists wanting to increase and regain skills. For the younger students I would say this would be good for an intermediate student.
This book, although old fashioned, is a brilliant book. It has a well thought out method on how to learn double stops. The book is progressive. I'm doing Royal Schools grade 2 and I can do the first part of the book but the book is also suitable for more advanced players. This is the kind of book that you will use through out your violin study career. I like especially that in the beginning exercises, they break the double stop into notes, and then you play it as a single note.
Excellent study manual. This is definitely where you begin extensive work on double stops & chords. Exercises galore! Fingerings, bowing patterns,advice on how to play, etc. You are well drilled. At the end you are bound to be good.I just began, but looked through the entire book. Only one issue thus far they did not explain fingered octaves, (I had to look it up on the web), but that's minor.I highly recommend this book!
It's okay...it gives a breakdown of the notes in the double stops and make you play them separately, then separately but faster, and next thing you know you are playing a double stop. What is good about the book is the layout of the chords and keys.
drills drills drills pure and simple, starting out simple and ending up at scary and impressive.printing is incredibly clear compared to my modern workbooks. it's gorgeous.
