This compilation of police related vignettes is a real treat to read. They come from a source who, with 30 years of street experience, accurately portrays the nuances of police work. As such, it is a perfect blending of the funny, dangerous, sad and outrageous facets of police life in Chicago. It is an absolute "Must Read" for all active and retired law enforcement officers who may recall instances when they were similarly situated. More importantly, this fast paced treatment is also critically important to any criminal justice student who aspires to wear the badge and walk the walk. The readership will receive stories from both the patrolman and supervisory points of view. That alone makes this treatment of police work a valuable tool. What becomes crystal clear is that good supervisors come from the ranks of good patrol officers. Sgt. Casey is one of those good officers with innate abilities to think quickly on his feet and react to a myriad of potentially dangerous situations. As one reads through these vignettes, we are constantly reminded of the dangers, tragedies and joys of policework. Sgt. Casey weaves these into a very believable and exciting look at his career in policing. Especially today, when police agencies around the country are villified, criticized and second guessed for any hint of wrongdoing, the author portrays officers as just normal human beings, complete with frailties, feelings and virtues. For those who, with hate-filled slogans, berate their police officers for actions perceived as wrong, I advise picking up a copy of this book. It just might change your opinion. It certainly will provide you with a different point of view. I salute his 30 year career and highly recommend this book.
Reading something in the words of the guy on the street; a down to earth and down right human story is a pleasure. You just don't find a treasure like this.If you have pets, a family, if you're married, have children, if you are responsible for people in an organization, or if you work with people, many people, you will understand and appreciate this book. If you haven't you will learn something. You will learn something about friendship, loyalty, leadership, and behavior. You will see a side of morality, ethics, and caring of a Chicago police officer in his daily duties out on the street. What you will find here is that which we as society would expect from our public servants. This book shows the character which serves a community; the character often lacking in the very same community by some of it's citizens. You will read about the bribe, and to the briber the humiliating unacceptance of the bribe. You will read of lessons learned by the indignant.Although I've not completed the book; I think I know where it is going. I'm sure I have a few hours of enjoyment ahead.Take some time. Get some laughs. Enjoy this great historic funny book now. It's all good.
To the people who are not the police - this is the true story. To the real police this is our story. Reading your book brings back so many memories of good times and bad time. It reminds me of some very bad people but more importantly it reminds me of some of the greatest people I have ever met. Some of the things in the stories will upset some folks. But the police job is not "nice" like so many people would like it to be. This is a perfect example of gallows humor. If you don't laugh you would cry. Thank you Larry. I needed to read this book. I think everyone needs to read it.
Have a laugh... shed a tear. Read it and enjoy it... and it's even better when you know the peeps in the story.
Nitty, Gritty, Humorous, Frequently Profane Depiction of Every-day Experiences of a "Family-Tradition" Chicago Cop.The Good, The Bad and the Heart Ripping tales of how a cop retains his humanity through sometimes inhuman events and often serves Justice a la carte on the streets of Chicago. Couldn't put it down till it was finished & then wished it was longer!
This is a wonderful book for those interested in police work. The average person on the street has no idea what law enforcement really does. This book will explain the daily grind of police work. Here’s a chance to live the life of the average policeman/woman as they cruse through their daily activates. The only thing better would be as a passenger in the patrol car. I highly recommend it as a way of getting in touch with the people who are out there every day protecting our lives and property. Put yourself in their place for a day and see how you would react. For anyone contemplating a future in police work, here’s your chance to see into the future and know what you are getting into. This is a chance to enjoy and learn about your chosen profession. The perfect retirement gift for those leaving police work behind. Relive the days gone by and remember when you were there.
The stories are true. The man who wrote it is real! Believe that a policeman's life is not easy & decisions made in a split second. Excellent read for the non-police educated & a better read for those of us who lived the life! Larry set an example. Of course, there were moments of question as when he ran down an alley after a suspect without a radio after a shooting. There were also instances of kindness as when he took a young teacher to a lagoon to get gallons of water for a science project. Good job - thanks for sharing.
