This book is for the truly advanced pianist. I bought it for the song from Home Alone "Somewhere In My Memory". It is true to the song that runs through Home Alone, It is beautiful but quite difficult. I am one step above Intermediate and it is a labor of love. The book was well worth the price because there are so many other pieces in this book: Happy Holiday, Star of Bethlehem, Silver Bells etc. and Phillip Keverne does a great job with the arrangements....but if you are intermediate or above it will take some work. I am pleased with all the books in the Keveren Series, I would like to have all of them though they are mostly for the advanced pianist. His arrangements are really nice and I have not stumbled upon strange note arrangements that sound "wrong".
This Phillip Keveren Series book, like its others, has sturdy pages and nice, clean print, making the music pretty easy to sight read without leaning in close to the page.The pieces themselves are, for the most part, very nice. The difficulty level for most pieces is intermediate, with speed being the most challenging aspect. A common trait in the Phillip Keveren pieces is that the melody switches into the left hand, while the right hand plays accompaniment for short sections - this is a nice touch and really great for practicing.There isn't exactly consistency throughout the pieces though: "Star of Bethlehem" is really pretty and challenging enough with it's key changes, but "Somewhere in My Memory" wasn't really as good as it could have been (same with "Sally's Song"), but it may actually help newer pianists enjoy playing the less complicated pieces.Overall, this is a nice book with lots of newer songs that younger people will be more familiar with and have fun playing. The pieces are recognizable and usually not too hard. I pull my book out every year and play through the pieces just for fun, and I always enjoy it.
I thoroughly enjoy how Philip Keveren arranges music. This album has not let me down either. I love the special music I get to play at Christmas time.
