Looking at some of the other reviews of tenor banjo instruction books here, including even some 5-string bluegrass, -- but still allegedly "tenor" -- banjos, and even a very prosaic guide by Mel Bay, [which garners a 5 star average!], I have, once again, to feel a bit embarrassed at the very low level of understanding and appreciation that cutting-edge Celtic music receives in this wayward land.First of all, Gerry O'Connor is probably, if not certainly, the FINEST CELTIC BANJO PLAYER ON THE PLANET IN OUR TIMES! Of course, as we all know, there are some great musical geniuses in this world who, for whatever reason, seem completely unable to convey their key methods and stylistic ornaments to others, at least in a clear and logically organized manner. But Mr. O'Connor is definitely not among that crowd, for every exercise and solo in this book features some new and well worth learning aspect of the finest contemporary Celtic tenor playing.The book also ships with a very easy to use CD, which plays all the exercises at a tempo much closer to what one would use, after first learning to play each tune cleanly, if slowly, when actually performing the piece before an audience.Finally, although no less important, the selection of tunes to learn has clearly been chosen very carefully. Not only is there a wide variety of tunes from all the main Celtic sub-genres; from jigs, to slip-jigs, to polkas, reels, hornpipes, strathspeys etc.. The selections chosen as examples are neither totally obscure nor so overplayed as to be hackneyed.
