This is a fascinating peek at the world of Victorian royalty, diplomacy and the British navy. The current Duke of Edinburgh's grandparents hailed from Germany but due to their royal births were related to many European monarchies. These links were later solidified through marriage and at one time Louis and Victoria Mountbatten were connected to the thrones of England, Germany, Russia, Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Spain, among others.Louis of Battenberg was born of a morganatic marriage but through his parents' exemplary behavior the Battenbergs were soon restored to royal prerogatives. Louis however was destined for a life in the British Navy where he overcame prejudice at both his German heritage and royal status to become First Sea Lord, only to see his German connection cost him this position and his naval career due to anti-German hysteria which swept England during World War I. Indeed, the Mountbattens, along with many members of the British Royal Family, discarded their royal German titles as Prince and Princess of Battenberg and became the Marquis and Marchioness of Milford-Haven, the first Mountbattens. Louis never regained his status in the Royal Navy but was later recognized for his dedication and brilliancy and his earlier successes and innovations. His youngest son, Louis Mountbatten, also rose to prominence in the admiralty, matched his father's rank and became the last Viceroy of India.Victoria was the favorite granddaughter of Queen Victoria and was the old Queen's go-between to ease friction between "Grandmama" and her numerous relatives throughout Europe.
