Ms. Fernández is professor of music transcription and music theory at the Conservatory of Murcia, and further impressive credentials are cited on the cover. According to Claude Worms's Foreword, this book "represents the first attempt by a classical musicologist to systematically describe the musical language of flamenco."This could well be true, strictly speaking: although there have been previous attempts to describe the musical language, I do not recall seeing a previous one by an actual musicologist. Moreover, this is the first book on Flamenco I've seen that appears explicitly to target students of classical music; and the cover proclaims it to have won the Flamenco Research Award of the Cante de Las Minas International Festival. It is entirely in grammatical English, and uses staff notation throughout. The obstacles to such an endeavour are, as we know, not trivial. To present a lengthy analysis of the development of classical harmony presents no problem; Mozart is unlikely to sue for breach of copyright. Paco de Lucía (and/or his record company) may be another matter. But analysis there must be — explanations without examples are inadequate. There are various approaches to this problem:1. Use material old enough to be out of copyright.2. Use your own material (and preferably include a CD).3. Use extracts of copyrighted material small enough to fall under the "fair use" provisions of the Law.4. Pay for and get the necessary copyright clearances5. Refer to other published editions of the material in question. The author seems to have elected a mixture of 1, 2 and 3 (but no CD), plus a leavening of material sufficiently general to be in the public domain.
