This was a required book for a class that I took. I liked that all the terms weren't overwhelming as some texts can be. My teacher knows the author and seemed to have respect for him (obviously or she wouldn't have used the book!!) He described things well because he had actually studied all the music that he wrote about.Great book even if you want a quick guide to world music.
I bought this book for a Music of the World class for a college course. Book was interesting and well written. Three CDs included were easy to find what you were looking for. Website was sort of difficult to navigate.
This book contains a pretty good overview of world music in both musical and cultural contexts. My only complaint about the content of the book is that if you don't have time to read an entire chapter, you will not be able to use the summary at the end of the chapter to get a basic understanding of it. The summaries are minimal. My biggest complaint is about the condition of the book. I bought it used from a third party seller who listed it in good condition when it clearly was not. In addition to excessive highlighting throughout the book, it appears as though a child got ahold of the highlighter and did extensive 'work' himself.
I am a teacher, and I use this as a reference in my music appreciation class. This book comes in handy during our cultural music unit. The kids are really interested in what music sounds like in other countries!
Needed it for a class in school.Great book. I learned way more than I thought I knew about music around the world. The audio disc helps with the learning. You hear music you might never hear in your life.
Happy new year! This is a good book with lots of highlight mark, which gives me some important information about the key points!
Well organized, comprehensive, detailed, and does a really good job of explaining the different types of music in the world.
It was a great resource for my class and was very interesting to read. I still listen to the music that came on the CDs.
