The Mathematics Of Love

In this must-have for anyone who wants to better understand their love life, a mathematician pulls back the curtain and reveals the hidden patterns-from dating sites to divorce, sex to marriage-behind the rituals of love. .The roller coaster of romance is hard to quantify; defining how lovers might feel from a set of simple equations is impossible. But that doesn't mean that mathematics isn't a crucial tool for understanding love. .Love, like most things in life, is full of patterns. And mathematics is ultimately the study of patterns-from predicting the weather to the fluctuations of the stock market, the movement of planets or the growth of cities. These patterns twist and turn and warp and evolve just as the rituals of love do. .In The Mathematics of Love, Dr. Hannah Fry takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the patterns that define our love lives, applying mathematical formulas to the most common yet complex questions pertaining to love: What's the chance of finding love? What's the probability that it will last? How do online dating algorithms work, exactly? Can game theory help us decide who to approach in a bar? At what point in your dating life should you settle down? From evaluating the best strategies for online dating to defining the nebulous concept of beauty, Dr. Fry proves-with great insight, wit, and fun-that math is a surprisingly useful tool to negotiate the complicated, often baffling, sometimes infuriating, always interesting, mysteries of love.

Wow, for any intellectual who wants to look at dating from a different perspective, this book does a very, very good job of weaving complex theories in math, economics, and even psychology into the world of dating. The author definitely gets kudos for her job with her explanation of Nobel-prize winning ideas and relating them to the average person in the context of dating.Girls, this book explains (mathematically) why you're on the losing end of the stick if you don't approach guys. Guys, it is our privilege, not our burden to be the gender that does the approaching.

I read this book in a couple sittings over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. The author shows how mathematics can be used to illuminate love-related topics like couple pairing, online dating, deciding when to settle down, wedding planning and maintaining relationship harmony. A fun introduction to the related mathematical concepts, with bibliographical references for more in-depth study if desired.

What an excellent read. I was drawn to this book based on an excerpt posted about "low tolerance" relationships (talked about in the last section, I think) but there was a lot of reasoning that rang true and made me consider what was written. A refreshing take on statistics and something that's, seemingly, non mathematical.

I have to agree with another reviewer here: the book is an easy and enjoyable read due to the author's ability making the information understandable but it falls short of what it claims to cover.Among topics covered, the book presents some practical advice to get an advantage in a dating game or to avoid chaos in planning the wedding. However, the information presented in a book in terms of proofs and patterns is sketchy and not sufficient; and hence, it is not very convincing of the author's claim.

1 star or 5, which should I give it? (See page 48). It deserves 5.This is not a text book about applying Mathematics to love, but it is a nice introduction to how Mathematics might be applied to human relationships. It is easy to read, provides simple, understandable examples and presents enough footnotes and 'Further Reading' to allow anyone truly interested continue research.I would also recommend: Sex and Cognition (Bradford Books)If I were ever offered the choice, not think I'll ever be made such an offer, of meeting the Queen of England or this author, I would choose this author - no question.

One thing even a non-mathematician will agree upon, human behavior is a function of many factors. This book is simply and effectively a mathematician's attempt to describe such human behaviors in the form of mathematical expressions consisting of equations with coefficients, variables and constants. Nicely written and effectively explained.

Great little book, I bought for a family member who is a medical scientist and mathematician. She loves it!

This book shows love through the eyes of mathematics. For those who seek for rational patterns to find your ideal couple, you might not get any useful tips. but you would have a lot of fun and might develop a wider insight on the mathematics of love. This is a great book!
