Having just recently emigrated from South Africa to New Zealand I have found this book extremely useful in that here I have a very good reference of the building style in NZ that is not found in South Africa. I originally found this book in the Library here in NZ. My first reaction was that I simply had to have a copy of this book and immediately ordered one from . Their service has always been excellent and promptThe techniques in this book are very well explained and set out and the illustrations are professional,very crisp and very lively in colour. Anyone painting in watercolours should have one of these in his/her library for reference purposes. This book contains more than just being able to paint in rustic colours. It is a good all round reference for general painting techniques as well. I particularly like the demonstrations and the many close-ups of details that will certainly be of great help to beginners. Terry is a highly accomplished artist.I highly recommend this book for beginners as well as those of us who have been years in the business. I am a professional art teacher and have been drawing since 1944 and painting since 1946.
While the paintings in the book are lovely, and the steps are shown in a detailed way, this book does not actually show technique at all. Anyone who has painted even rudimentary landscapes already knows about paper, paint, mixing and brush care. Once you venture to these details, more actual techniques are helpful.
I stumbled upon Terry Harrison's instruction books several years ago. I soon decided that his clarity of instruction and his wonderful landscapes were something I wanted to emulate. I've collected all his books and I've never been disappointed. This one is no exception....it's excellent!
I'm not an artist. This book is for my Mother, a great artist, and she loves Terry Harrison's books. It's obvious why in this book, which has images and tutorials which even I can see are well done and attractive. Anyway, she thinks the book deserves 5 stars, and I'm sure she's right.
Interesting Barns from Europe. The cover of the book looks like any old country scene in the North America. But the book has more interested and varied barns within the book. He has many examples with demonstrations like the Windmill on pages 54 to 61 with 28 step by step pictures of his painting work in progress. He tells you the size and type of watercolor paper along with the materials and colors used. Within this book, he has examples of how to make roofs and wood on the side on buildings look real. I have tin roofs, tile roofs and wood shingle roofs. He has old gray wood with some bricks on the outside of the barn walls. He has great prospective of looks at the barns from different angles.
I painted some studys of an old barn and was begin to put together my final composition when I found this book. The section on perspective is the best and clearest explanation I have ever seen. The examples and instructions for painting old wood and rust are simple, but easy to follow. I got great results using this book. Highly recommend it. Also check out Painting Weathered Buildings in Paint, Ink & Waterhcolor. The two books have different examples and techniques and both are worth adding to your library if you paint weathered surfaces.
My first glance at the book, was: I wish I had time to start a water color project NOW..... I loved the old rustic buildings and barns ..... The instrucitons look detail and easy to follow ........ A lot of good visual details on "how to", even if some of the building are in Europe, the processes are the same ...... Glad to add it to my library...
I took up watercolor recently and ordered watercolor books from to read up on the subject, they had such good prices I ended up buying several. The books have great pictures, instructions & tips in them that are very helpful.
