Rather late in life, I decided to learn clarinet. After reviewing all the method books on m I selected this and it's Level 2. I found the books not for the serious student. There is very little material on scales or arpeggios or on things like using the register key. Mostly the teach you how to play songs. If you don't read music, it gives you lots of material on this. If you do read music (I do) then what is left is not much. The Level 2 is more of the same. The most worthwhile part is the DVD, which shows you how to assemble the instrument, put the reed in, and how to hold it. You also get some visuals on embouchure. I eventually bout Gustave Langenus' 'Complete Method for the Clarinet'. Part one is available from . It expects you to read music.
I'm 47 and picked up a clarinet for the first time. Book is very simple but the play along cd makes all the difference.
This is a pretty good basic book for those just starting with or getting back into the clarinet. I've had three lessons now and have reached the end of what it has. Either time to get the next step or do something else. I just looked at Rubank's Elementary Method book. It has less personality, but far more substance, than this one. I'm going to order the next step in Rubank's, but I've got to get to the end of the first book yet, and there is a LOT more material to go through than the Hal Leonard series!!I don't hate the Leonard book. It's a great book within its limitations, but I hit them at the end of my third week using it. The DVD is very informative, but watch it once and that's the only time you'll need it. The CD is kind of a cute gimmick, though, if you're into playing along with the band at their tempo. Makes playtime out of practice time.
